A- The ahaadeeth which forbid wearing PLAIN red.
1. From al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib (may Allaah be pleased with him): “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade us to use soft red mattresses and qasiy – garments with woven stripes of silk.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5390)
2. From Ibn ‘Abbaas, who said: “I was forbidden (to wear) red garments and gold rings, and to recite Qur’aan in rukoo’.” (Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, no. 5171. Imaam al-Albaani said: its isnaad is saheeh. Saheeh Sunan al-Nasaa’i, 1068).
Sahih Muslim Hadith 5173 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As
Allah’s Messenger (saws) saw me wearing two clothes dyed in saffron, whereupon he (saws) said: ‘These are the clothes (usually worn by) the non-believers, so do not wear them.’
1798. Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) prohibited men from wearing saffron-dyed clothes.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
1799. `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) saw me dressed in two saffron-coloured garments and asked, “Has your mother commanded you to wear these?” I asked him, “Shall I wash them out?” He replied, “You had better set them to fire.”
Although the color ‘orange’ is not prohibited by name, a shade of modern-day ‘orange’ that has specifically been discouraged as a color of clothing for the believers is ‘saffron’. The Messenger of Allah (saws) disapproved the believers to wear ‘saffron’ colored clothing as they are usually worn or associated with the religion and clothing of the disbelievers. Even today the Hindu priests and priestesses or the Buddhist monks wear a shade of this ‘saffron’ colored attire, and clothing of this color is generally associated with the clothing and religious color of the disbelievers.
Sa’sa’ah bin Suwhan said to ‘Ali:
“O Commander of the Believers! Forbid us from that which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade you from.” He said: “He forbade us from Ad-Dubba, Al-Hantam, Al-Ji’ah, and from gold circles (rings), and from wearing silk, and from red Al-Mitharah.”
